Gas-price gap widens

While Southwest Ohio motorists were enjoying gasoline prices as low as $2.52 a gallon Tuesday, Northern Kentucky's use of cleaner-burning but more expensive reformulated gas appears to be keeping its pump prices higher.

The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded in Northern Kentucky, at $2.94, was 29 cents more than the $2.65 average in Southwest Ohio. Usually, prices are a dime or so higher in Northern Kentucky.

Matthew Roberts, an agricultural economist with Ohio State University, said reformulated gas is used on the East Coast, California and some major Midwestern cities, which makes its supply tighter and its price sometimes more expensive.

"There's generally less reformulated gas produced," he said.

Crude oil prices have been on the rise. But at least one analyst thought that gasoline prices wouldn't follow.

Tom Kloza, an analyst with the Oil Price Information Service, said the "petro-noia" that pushed up crude and gas prices this spring was especially pronounced this year. He predicted that fuel prices, barring an unforeseen event such as a hurricane, already have peaked for 2007 and will stay at current levels in August before declining further in the fall.

"I think we'll see much more moderate prices," he said. "Crude oil has been going up on speculation and investment on Wall Street."

Strange how neighbor states seperated could be so far apart when it comes to the price of fuel.

Look out for the smog monster [img]eek.gif[/img]

Smog alert issued through Friday
THE ENQUIRER

The Hamilton County Department of Environmental Services has issued a smog alert for Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky for today and Friday.

A combination of ozone, heat, humidity, air pollution and other factors means the air quality will probably be unhealthful for sensitive groups, children, the elderly and people with respiratory problems.

Experts advise people to avoid prolonged exertion outdoors to prevent health problems.


To improve air quality, suggestions include carpooling or riding a bus, walking or bicycling for short trips, proper vehicle maintenance, cutting back on electricity use and not refueling vehicles or using gasoline-powered lawn equipment before 6 p.m.
